Powermax 155 - Type of HX

Spoke to Potterton Baxi to ask what material the HX was on an IMI Powermax 155. First time they said ALIMINIUM. This doesn't sound right, so called back and asked their Tech Support the same question.
"What is the HX made of on a Powermax 155". This time he said most definitely COPPER.

This is important, as I am about to descale the boiler, and do not want to cause damage.

So third time, called back and asked them to put in an email what material the HX is really made from. This time he said STAINLESS STEEL !!!

Does anyone out there ACTUALLY know the correct answer, as Potterton clearly haven't a clue?

There may be some cofussion over which heat exchanger you are on about as it doesnt technically have one other than the stainless steel plate heat exchanger which is only on the certain models otherwise it is merely a large copper cylinder which is a heat store and basically works the opposite way to a conventional cylinder

You're presumably planning to descale the SECONDARY part of the DHW heat exchanger. This includes stainless steel and copper, if it's the standard Alfa-Laval type. Since the rest of the plumbing that will have to contain the chemical is also going to be copper (presumably), your chemical needs to be compatible with copper and you probably don't need to worry too much about the S/steel.

It doesn't. The latest Powermax has an integral unvented cylinder. The IMI Powermax has a thermal store, initially a integral coil then a plate.

Many people get them mixed up. Many say Pott when they mean IMI.

There is a very good reason why we are number 1 boiler manafacturer in UK quite simply we are the best

And Suprima (not Suprema by the way) had some issues with the pcbs which has been resolved now but was still number 1 selling boiler for over 5 years so cant be that bad

Don't think it was the 155 got an idea it was the 135 that 10 gritish bas engineers had a problem with recently with tragic consequences. Just thought you would like to know Archer1 before you delve too deep there are lots of references to it. The lady who lived in Oxford called BG out 10 times and not one of their guys spotted the problem. Problem is they won't tell us what it was either

That was a 185 which had a blockage in the air inlet tube and the gas valve was incorectly adjusted and with a leaking burner gasket as well caused CO to spill into the room a tragedy thats for sure
