Hello,

I’m a big indoor DIYer and finally venturing into outdoor DIY where I’ve 0 experience so looking for some advice…

I’m planning on putting a shed and some decking at the bottom of the garden and doing some research into the best base/prep for each is leading to some conflicting results… would I ideally need to place some rubble under the whole area and then concrete just under where the shed will be? Or can I leave the soil under the decking area and only rubble then concrete the shed area? Does it also need to be an certain distance from the surrounding fence to avoid trapped water? And also any advice on when/what type of membrane to add would be very helpful… appreciate I’m asking a lot, very much a novice in this field!!

I’ve attached some photos of current garden and then poor photoshop of my plan…ignore the state of it…I’m working on it…

Thanks in advance!

I got the surface reasonably level, put a membrane down followed by slabs positioned to take treated wooden bearers which the shed sat on. The bearers have not rotted, the only slight downside is that the entrance is a few inches higher above above ground level as a result.

Put the shed on the decking. Omit deck boards where the shed goes, use treated timber, say 4x2 spaced 300mm apart in place of the decking, this will be cheaper than deck boards, be stronger, and provide useful ventilation under the shed.

Is the fence where you plan to put the shed your side?
I'd consider doing that first, if it is, and plan a meter between the two for easy access and maintenance. You could put the shed on an eco-block base for support, or use a frame with spikes stuck in the ground with a weed membrane beneath. Avoid concrete, as it makes more work for yourself and if you ever wish to change the shed or the location it leaves a permenant mark on the earth.
