I am wanting to wallpaper (using some thick lining paper) several walls in my house. The lining paper should hide some imperfections and look nice and clean when painted - I am not a fan of directly painting on the plaster.
The walls in a slightly 'mixed' condition with a variety of different surfaces. I have sections of exposed concrete, exposed plaster, new bonding/filler, paint (which seems pretty set in place) and other vinyl/latexy paint which can be peeled off in places. All the existing wallpaper has been removed.
My questions are:
- Do I need to remove this waxy/latexy/vinyly paint (and expose the concrete/plaster underneath)? If so what is the best way to do this?
- If I don't need to remove it, can I just sand it down to give the wall a good key and remove any obvious flakey bits?
- Should I size ONLY the exposed plaster/concrete/filler sections and then go on to prime the entirety of the walls before papering. The fact I have some mixed surfaces is confusing me a wee bit! Or can I just go ahead and size everything with dilute paste?
