Hi,

I’ve removed the old tiles from a shower room in preparation for tiling. There was quite a large damp area in the corner so I’ve cut away the plasterboard and will dot and dab some more then skim over to prepare this area.

For where the shower valve was, what would be the best way to prepare this? When I removed it, it was simply screwed into the piece of timber you can see in the photo and then tiled over.

Thanks

Guyan

For the shower bottom - cut the new plaster plate to size. Give the bare brick a good coating of SBR, let it dry, then repeat. Mix up some of the Tiling Adhesive you will have bought, and use a 12mm Trowel put a full bed across the bricks then stick the board in. If it’s low, then either dot dab the low bits, or take it off and then put another smaller notch trowel across the board as well. Obviously tamping in with a large flat edge to bed it in flat. Use another wee bit of adhesive and the flat short edge of the trowel to ‘skim in’ over the join gap all the way round. Now SBR the entire shower area.

For the shower valve patch, make sure that piece of wood is solid, then cut a rough Plasterboard patch the right size and screw it on to the wood. Cut another patch and repeat, straight over the top. Cut the third patch as good a fit as poss, and fit that on, this time with no screws, but with a massive dod of adhesive - this way you can press it in to adjust the depth till it’s flat with the rest of the wall.
The tricky bit is the how and where you want the Shower Valve. If you’re fitting a mixer you want a “ shower PL8”. If you’ve only using the one feed, then your 90 deg elbow has to go on….. that’s the balancing act to combine with putting the patches in …..
