how do i recharge the pressure vessel? i know where it is and to use a pump, but how will i know when to stop pumping.

you need the boiler spec or vessel spec this will tell you what to charge the pressure vessel up to

it should tell you in the intructions what to take it to.

You'll have to drain the wet side of the expansion vessel (it needs to be open to the atmosphere) before you recharge the gas side. Otherwise, when you try to check the gas pressure, you will actually be checking the pressure of the water on the other side of the diaphragm.
