Problem removing radiators

I am attempting to remove the radiators in my new house for decorating. I am using two adjustable spanners as recommended in other articles in this forum but the nut won't crack open. It appears to be covered in Boss White (or similar) which is obviously old and rock hard. Any tips to soften up the area.

drain the rad and apply some heat ie blowlamp
