Hi

I am going to install some down lighters in the hall, the problem is the hall is a strange shape. I have measured the ceiling and marked out the location of all lights, so they look symmetrical but have found one of them is directly under a joist, the problem i have if i move the light over its going to ruin the whole layout and look.
Is there a way around this? can you get smaller fittings that will sit into a joist and only remove an inch or so of the wood?

Thanks

There's the problem. Please consider some other type of lighting.

No and no. You can't cut sections out of the bottom of a joist to fit lighting or for any other purpose.

If your hall is long and narrow, like many others, then D/Ls may be ok, not efficient, but if looks are more important than cost, then feel free.

However, you're a bit stuffed if there are joists in the way.

Have you considered LED strip lighting, the cost is dropping quite quickly fo these now when planned right, they can look great.

Thanks for feed back

I know you should not cut joists but was thinking if i did i could put a steel brace on the joist, but its a lot of extra work and effort, im sure if i asked an electrician to come in and install ceiling lights they would just put them in the best place and not work around issues like this.

As for LED strip lights they or great but you need a way of concealing them which i don't have

Hi

Managed to move the light across, the fitting that i got allows the 70mm hole to be 10mm over the joist, and still the fitting goes in OK, and the bulb has plenty of air space for cooling.... :)

either add one or remove one and re-plan your layout.. it will alter the spacings.. if that doesn't work, try wall mounted uplighters...

But how does that allow for the usual >200mm space downlights require around them?
