Protecting conservatory glass from falling tiles above.

When having a glass roofed conservatory built I often see some kind of fall guard fitted to the eaves above to stop falling tiles damaging glass.
My question to you is this mandatory or just sensible?

snow gaurd, depends on your roof type and condition.

If i had falling tiles or slates on a roof i'd be spending the conservatory budget on fixing the roof!

Not mandatory but sensible, a heavy enough build up of snow sliding from the main roof onto a conservatory carries enough weight to cave the roof in.

They look nice. The ones I've seen previously were fitted to the rafters

I always thought they were to stop leaves or balls?
