An old house which is being demolished to create a new access road has all the electrics wired in purple single cores. The ends of the cores appear to be identified by various coloured cotton tied round them. Even the CPC is purple with green cotton.

Several very ancient reels of the same cable were found when the building was cleared.

The previous owner was a recluse described as a "mad professor" type who had been a government scientist during World War II

I wonder if the cable was a leftover from some industrial control job or similar.

Yes, a life of a intelligent man ripped to threads including his wiring. You can be assured it would be a very neat job. Not a bit YT is sight.

I gather that a few years ago he had been offered a brand new home on the same rent free basis but refused it. Like many highly intelligent people he had difficulty dealing with people and thus avoided any contact with them. Having neighbours would have been something he would not have been able to cope with. The only person he felt at ease was the son of one of his war time colleagues.

During the war the area had been the home of a government department and he had lived on site. After the war the land owner allowed him to stay in the house rent free. Some time later the land was sold to a new owner and the old man's rent free use of the house was irrevocably established in the deeds.

This is commonly used as it allows for easy fault identification.

"The fault is on the purple wire"
