Hello, I hope someone can help me please.

Our push button toilet has recently started to fill very slowly, its like a 'hissing' sound coming from the part that lets the water through (sorry for my lack of terminology).

I have looked inside the toilet today and loosened the nut on the cistern and this (for a time - 4-5 flushes) solved the problem, I could hear the water gushing out.

However I am back to square one, on top of the cistern I can see a small cap, which I assume can be removed of and I assume (by reading other threads) that there is some limescale in there that may be causing the blockage (we also live in a hard water area).

My questions are: Am I on the right path? If so can this cap be removed and the cistern cleaned? Last thing I want to do is remove the cap and find it can't be put back on.

Responses and advice would be much appreciated.

As you do get many varied toilet inlets, can you put up a pick of it? Is it a ballcock type or other?

Many thanks I shall get one ordered.

Is it as simple as switch of the water, un-screw the previous float valve and fit this one? Or do I require a plumber to fit?

Only if your bank account is well in the black.

Procedure as you've laid out.

The cistern valve washer is inside the knurled ring which holds on the float arm. On the left of your images
If the washer is a Siamp like this...

they can suffer from getting a hole in the rubber, and then the tank fills slowly. You'll probably need to stretch the rubber a bit to see the hole.

New washer from a DIY shed for little money.

I did 2 of my neighbours with same problem as yours.

Change the whole thing by all means but just seems an easier and much cheaper fix to me to change the washer.

I have ordered a washer from ebay, I will replace this before going any further.

I actually did get the toilet to fill properly yesterday for about 5 fills, then it went back to spray; I did this by adjusting the nut. However I tried the same today and its just spraying again.

Lets hope its just the washer....as I assume getting a plumber to replace the cistern is an expensive job.

Many thanks,
James

Hi,

The valve washer should arrive today so will replace tonight, one question is how tight should the big nut be?

The nut was so tight before I had to take some clamps to it!

Thank you,
James

Good evening,

Thank you for the responses so far.

The washer has arrived, ive removed the big nut and I can locate what I assume is the washer to be replaced. Please see the image.

Is it as simple as pull out the existing washer and replace with the new one?

Apologies for the simple questions, im an absolute newbie when it comes to plumbing so I wanted to ask for some experts advice on here.

If a clearer image is required I will do that but thought I would just draw around the area in question.

Many thanks,
James

Done - the SIAMP was replaced.
There was a visible split in the previous.
Thank you for all the replies.
