I'm handy, a good plasterer and DIY enthusiast, approaching my 40s quickly and looking to step out of the rat race. An old story I know, probably one we've all heard too often of late, however I'm interested in becoming a fully qualified electrician. I've seen various training providers, all offering concise courses with certifications/qualifications circa £5K. I really wanted to get some advice straight from the people on the front, so to speak, so am interested to know (a) what particular training experiences you've had, who was good, who was not, and (b) what the job prospects are for an Electrician "newbie"? Any advice or feedback would be very gratefully received.

I know this will come up, but stay away from the "become an electrician in a week" ads ;)

I don't know why you're looking at our trade to get out of the rat race?

Most tradesman here work extremely hard for a living, juggling jobs, chasing materials, chasing money, working to un-realistic completion dates, taking phone calls at all hours of the day & night. Take my word, it can be a really stressful.

And then when you get home there's the accounts to sort out, invoices to raise and more regs to learn.
