We're having our bedroom plastered in our ~1910 constructed house and having exposed the timbers would like to have a vaulted ceiling.
We will enlist an SE but would like some general advice as to whether the joists are structural (acting as ties) or not...
The purlins are supported on the piece of wood that runs centrally sitting on the joists but the joists all move slights left and right (some are completely free) and with it only being 6" x 1" I would assume (but will check) that they are not structural. They are connected to the rafters with one nail each.
