Can someone tell me why this has been done. The wall (and i use the term loosely) that seperates the bathroom and a bedroom had some water damage. So the course of action was to cut any wet plasterboard out, the funny thing about this wall is after the board had been cut out behind it is another board and behind that another board totaling 3 in all. Can anyone comment why this has been done , also there is a strange square honeycomb of what appears to be cardboard in between each wall stud. Anyone know if its needed or not . If it is what should it be replaced by. Same thing with the plasterboard should three layers be going up.

Sounds lika a "NEW" house....sound insulation  . I`d replace all the p/b. sheets but don`t bother about the "eggbox"...

Thanks, yes it is a newish house. Ive had a surveyor from a building firm out looking over the job he didnt really know why there were 3 skins of plasterboard in place. He said they would only want to put one skin up, but i thought there would be a reason why the building firm used 3 boards instead of 1 cos they wernt in the habit of doing things out of the goodness of there heart  . Your reply now confims that it was there for a purpose and not just a whim, so i will let firm know i want the three boards replacing. So was that eggbox as you termed it also used for sound insulation.

in new houses the only walls that are insulated are bathroom to bedroom or toilet to kitchen or bathroom and that doesn't include hallways and believe me thats if any is lying about. the 3 skins of board could be a number of reasons the wrong boards turned up on the job so they had to triple them to make up the soundproofing or more than likely the wrong size timbers were used for the stud wall or a wider casing was used for the doorway.

Thanks jbonding, im just waiting for the builders to give me a start date and official details of what they intend doing and i will take it from there. From the workmanship ive seen round the house some of your comments seem very apt. Only one that wouldnt apply is the wider casing as the doors on a different wall.
