Quick connect pipe adaptors

The irrigation valve/timer gadget I have just bought, is designed to fit straight on to a 1/2" tap, via a supplied 3/4 to 1/2 reducer. Direct onto the tap, it seals up just fine, but I need to have the unit in the middle of some pipe, so it needs a male quick connector on it's input and output. I have a two males with a 1/2" thread, but just cannot get either to seal - The thread on the males, doesn't have thread all the way to the sealing face, it stops some way short, and as a result, it only catches on a couple of threads. Ideally, I need the male to have thread right to the end, and to present a good flat face to the seal. Is there such a thing?

You may need to ask specifically for a 'close nipple' fitting if the regular ones don't have enough thread. Close nipples have the thread running the full length of the fitting.

You will also need a rubber or silicone seal or washer at each connection point to ensure a watertight seal.

Remember to use some form of thread sealant as well (like PTFE tape), which will help you to create a watertight seal.

Thanks, I've managed to work out what was going wrong - they were both the same thread, but one was a taper thread, the other a parallel thread - both plastic parts. I've managed to get it to seal, with extra washers and turning the end of the male thread down in the lath, to present a flat face.

I still don't know which part was parallel and which was tapered - are screw onto 1/2" tap adaptors tapered?

It depends. You can get both. Most cheap ones are not tapered.
