I need help settling an argument! I would really appreciate it if people would let me know how long you have your central heating on for in the winter and what temperature you keep your thermostat at.

My boyfriend insists that the thermostat is never any higher than 18 degrees and he only allows it to be on for two hours in the evening. He says that no-one leaves their heating on all the time they are in but I disagree. Our house is draughty anyway and we are having cavity wall insulation installed soon but the heating comes on at 5pm and just about gets the house to 18 degrees before the heating goes off at 7pm and then the temperature drops to 14. I think this is far too cold but I could do with some other opinions so I know if I am being unreasonable. I just think that the heating should stay on while we are in and awake so it keeps our home at a constant temperature. What do you think?

TBH this smacks of a silly argument. You turn your heating on when it's cold, and leave it on until such time that you're bored of being warm and want to be cold again.

I think many people will program their heating to come on around home-from-work time, and turn off at bedtime ish.

The set figure on the thermostat is much of a muchness. Different rooms have different design temperatures, and typically if the system is set up and balanced properly, a room stat in a hall set at 18 degrees would allow the temperature in the lounge of somewhere around 20-21 degrees.

Is your boyfriend scottish?

Is he very tall, with short arms?? Does he stand furthest from the bartender? Perhaps you need to be in a warmer bedroom for a few nights?

Lots of couples argue over how cold to be (cost of heating is a different and extra problem). Maybe he grew up in a cold house and goy used to it. Either you need a new boyfiend or a lot of thick wooly underwear.

mines usually on 4 hours per night. no stat, but temp on boiler is about 3/4. and i also use UPS again since it give off heat
