Hi all

Out my depth here. I've got a fair bit of decorating to do. I've blocked up an old internal doorway with plasterboard that I need to tape and fill at the sides. I've also got a load of holes that need filled in (some small, some bigger) prior to painting. Plan is to then use gardz before painting with easycare paint. I had read that toupret filler was best option for general filling however most videos I watch on taping and filling seems to use easifill. Just want to check if I'm better using 2 different products or if they are much the same thing and I can use one for all work?

Sorry if a daft question. I tried using premade filler upstairs and was an absolute mess, so I'm wanting to cover my bases and do a better job downstairs

Cheers

The manufacturers of Easifill recommend using their tape and join filler for the joins- see the video.

Toupret is a better product.
Easyfill is made for drywall filling and taping. So that's applying to plasterboard.
It's can have adhesion problems over painted surfaces and if used in depth can be slow drying.
It also can start to bubble up when applied over dry surfaces like skimming over itself.
It's a good product that many stick with when there are better products for some jobs. I don't use now.

Toupret is faster drying. Can be used for a wider range of filling applications. Sticks better.
After using loads of both I tend to stick to the toupret.
One tip. This is for all fillers. Keep mixing up a new fresh mix and keep applying a new layer over a set layer. Damp sponge the edges of filled areas.
If filler dries it's much harder to skim over as it pulls. I keep applying until I've finished and after drying a light sand.

Tape I use fibre fuse now.
Boarders I fill joints and let that set for 45 mins before taping. Stops any sag

I seldom use easyfill. It is odd that the manufacturer recommends their tape and join filler over easyfill. I have also just noticed that they only recommend Easyfill 60 for tape and join, and not the other two (faster curing) variants (15 minute and 30 minute).

With regards to powder based fillers on plaster, yeah, I am going with Toupret TX110.

Thanks for this. I probably should have said at the start that I'm an absolute novice so apologies for not fully understanding here but I think you're saying that once filled that I should wet the filler material before skimming over? My plan had just been to fill the holes with toupret or easifill, add a 2nd coat and then sand and paint the entire wall, I wasnt specifically skimming the wall etc. is this all the same thing just being discussed a different way or is there a step I'm missing.

Also i do need to tape over gaps around the plaster board sheet I've fitted over an old doorway, so similar to above I can just fill over the tape and paint?

Also, I noticed there's quite a few versions of toupret, any specific one you use?

Apologies again, I'm sure your answer was clear enough for most people

I don't dampen filler. I apply second and third coats if required as it's setting. So that's around 45 mins intervals.
Damp sponge the edges to blend in then a light sand when dry.

I use the tx110 filler but the standard one is fine for you as you won't be in any rush

As for taping board joints. Yes tape them. You could risk not taping and see what happens. Might be fine if there is no movement
