I’ve just had a quote for a dr fix ridge system using existing ridge tiles £1900 no broken tiles just missing mortar where magpies have picked it out, normal semi detached, is this a reasonable price or excessive, or would it be cheaper just to have them re cemented

Sounds like a lot of money but is that for a standard 2 storey semi, a large detached bungalow or a multi-faceted roof full of valleys and pedements ? More info and some possible photo's will enable members to give you a more accurate answer as things like height, access, location etc all have a bearing on the cost.

Hi, thank you for replying it’s a two storey semi in South Yorkshire

It is massively overpriced. I had all of my ridge tiles done on my semi, a few years ago, at a cost of around £100. Is it something other than remortaring the ridge tiles, if so why?

He says it will be a dry fix ridge system whatever that is, not just re mortar I’m nearly 70 so don’t really understand but it sounds as if re mortar would be a lot cheaper maybe I need to get another quote

The dry fit system can be bought for around £70 or less for a 6 meter length and even if you had a 7 meter roofline and had to buy 2 that is less than £150. The existing ridge are reused so unless they are providing a scaffold to both sides of the house it does seem VERY expensive. Get at least 2 more quotes, ideally from somebody who has been recommended to you and get clear like for like specifications from them.

It seems a little on the high side but if done properly i.e. re bed with mortar and mechanically fixed you have got your roof sorted. Ask him if he will use scaffolding, and for examples of his previous work.

Blup

Its clay plain tiles so a bit more complicated than a semi with interlocking tiles on.

I'm guessing he does not really want to do the job.

honestly you would be better off getting them re bedded (not pointed) and to keep everyone happy screw fix too.
If he or they avoid doing that the they probably are not up to the job

Big difference between pointing and re bedding, get that clarified
