Hi we have just had our radiators replaced and I am sure that the plumber has fitted a rad that is too small, when we measured up (imperial) we thought we could get a 500 in, but he has fitted a 400 with spacers. I questioned this but he said that's all that can fit, how do I check??

Pipework centres less 85mm would be biggest rad you would normally fit you can with a push get down to 80mm ish .
Some of online one room calculators are hopeless out always high.
Calculations should always take into consideration wall type celling/ floor construction size/ type glazing possible heat gain from other rooms ect otherwise waste of time.

How tall is it? Could you fit a taller rad of the same width?
Change it for a double?

no 500mm is metric 500 " imperial would be a massive rad
As above, measure between the valves. Looks to me like there's room for a 500 there, plumber probably had that one left from another job

.That was my thought too. If the old one was 20" = 508mm, so a 500mm rad should go in nicely. Difference taken up by play in the pipework, and how far in the rad tails are screwed.As above, measure between the valves.
