Normal valves you manually open - close to try and get the right amount of water through them into the radiator to give you the radiator (room) temperature you require. Thermostatic valves allow you to set the temperature you require on each radiator via the 'tap' on the valve (normally graduated on a scale of 0 (cold) to 5 (hottest)). Then the valve automatically controls the flow of water into the radiator to achieve the temperature you have set.
