Had central heating installed in '80's never had any trouble. When the water only was switched on the upstairs radiators warmed up particularly the bathroom which suited me. This year I had a new bathroom suite installed and as the old radiator was a single flat one decided to replace it. Builder arranged plumber to do so and ever since the system is not the same. When the water is on all the upstairs radiators come on except the bathroom. I contacted the builder and the plumber and have now been told that the orginial central heating system was installed incorrectly at the beginning and that it is a fault this I cannot accept and just wanted like for like. I called the plumber again he came fiddled around said he had bled the radiators etc and that everything should now be O K - it is not -also when the pump is on the bathroom is not particularly warm (it is only a small bathroom) the landing and my front room is warmer than the bathroom. Have contacted them again but I feel they are not going to respond as they said vaguely they would'nt be able to anything about it until the new year. I don't think I will hear anything from them again -they were paid promptly!

Turn all the rads off but not the bathroom rad, turn the heating on as normal.

Does the bathroom rad heat up?

Turned off all rads except the bathroom turned on the water (without the pump) and the bathroom rad stayed cold. The pipe at the bottom of the rad coming up through the floor felt warm though.

Which make/model boiler do you have?

How many water pipes connect to the boiler?

I have a Baxi Bermuda G F Super and it looks like 4 pipes coming out of it.

(The tank is downstairs in a cupboard in the same room as the boiler if that is of any useful information)

If there are more than two water pipes, you have a pumped heating, gravity hot water system. This means the water is pumped round the rads, but the HW cylinder is heated by natural circulation (hot water rises and cold water falls).

Changing the bathroom radiator has upset the gravity circulation.

The reason the upstairs rads heat up when only the HW is on is due to "reverse circulation", i e water is circulating the wrong way round the rads. You can check this by feeling which pipe heats up first on a rad; it will be the opposite pipe to when the pump is running.

Thank your for your help.

If changing the bathroom radiator has upset the gravity circulation what can be done to put it back to what it was before?

Your explanation has been the most informative I have had as the plumber said he had never heard of such a system and as I said previously told me that the system had been wrongly installed.

I am going to write to the builder who did the job and hopefully he will respond in the New Year.

Your help has been much appreciated.

Thank you
