Hello All,

I have a situation where the radiators in my house are turning off before they have warmed the house to the desired temperature. They tend to come on for a while, then turn off, perhaps for an hour or so, before coming back on again.

I believe the problem is a defective room thermostat, but I would like to hear what other people think.

Any comments welcome.

Thanks,

Matty

Turn off pwer to heating system, remove room stat cover and link out red and yellow wires. These are usually the switched live to and from the stat. If the rooms then get hot it has proved the faulty stat for you.

If the system turns off before it has reached a comfortable temperature then you just need to turn up the temperature on the thermostat!

If the room has not reached temp to turn room stat off and room stat is ok and set high enough, then you may have a faulty motor in motorised valve breaking down under load then it cools and works again they eventually pack up completly

Thanks for your respones.

I have done as gas4you suggested and linked the red and yellow wires on the 'stat, which, I assume, circumvents it.

After switching the power back on, the heating came on for half an hour or so, but then the boiler seemingly stopped heating water (only the pilot light is on) and the radiators cooled.

Following on from namsag has said, I have checked and I can see that the Horstmann H-3-22-M Actuator is switched to manual override, which suggests it wasn't working properly when the previous owners had the house, and they moved it to this status.

Does this suggest that the Actuator is the problem, and not the 'stat?

Thanks,

Matty

Now you have eliminated the obvious I am wondering if your rads going off is coinciding with the HW stat being satisfied.

Turn the cyl stat up and see if rads get hot again.

If so this points to the 3 port valve head being faulty and will need replacing.
