What size screw would be a direct replacement for a 4.5 x 100 wire nail for fixing rafters to purlins, I have bought 5.0 mm screws but the shank size does appear smaller than the nail.

If you buy metric sized screws, then the diameter is measured from the outside of the thread and not the shank
