Hi guys,

Am in the process of planning a raised deck platform, roughly 3.2 x 2.2 meters. I've come up with the attached plan for the bearer layout, just wanted to get some advice on whether this design is suitable & strong enough, or should it be designed differently.

It is basically 4 100x100mm posts with 2 2x6 joists screwed either side of the posts for the main supports. The remaining supports are an existing wall made from railway sleepers & then I will fill in between these with smaller 2x6 joists.

Do you think this will provide a strong & sturdy deck base or does it need to be different?

Thanks

It will be much less work and less materials to simply use 3.2m joists and span them right across. the 3.2m side. You will need a post in the middle of each one and a line of noggins down the centre line but its less of a faff than your current set-up which is probably fine by the way just a bit over engineered and over complicated

Do you think that option would provide a stronger more sturdy deck if I had less joists that were cut, ie just 4 or 5 3.2m lengths, bearing in mind this will be a raised deck?

yes the less joints the better.

you will need a post at the centre of the span of each one to take the bounce out of it.

What's the recommended distance between each post/joist for a raised deck that size?

When using 6x2 joists at 500 centres i'd say 1.5m between posts would be good.

If you have plenty of clearance underneath then rather than posts every joist you could put in a joist perpendicular to the main joists as per your diagram.

That will be less work.

Are you aware of possible planning issues with raised decks? You don't say how raised it is but check the planning portal for more info.
