Raising floor level

My living room floor is around 20mm lower then my hall which is causing problems as i want to laminate through to hall. Looked into screeding but quite pricey. Do you think we would be able to layer fibre board i.e. 2/3 layers. Also found polystyrine boards they bring it up great but concerned about heat from fire due to warnings on pack.
Any advice/ tips would be great thanks
