Hi ill explain the problem in the way it happened to me to make it more easy to explain

I have an electric meter which uses topup cards (not bills) and my electric cut out , hence the boiler went off and the pilot light cut off

usually that isnt a problem i just relight the pilot and it works fine
but since today whenever i try to relight the pilot it when i let go of the pilot switch it shoots up as if i have turned the heating on when it is not on

it will then make a noise like it does when its heating up water, but instead of carrying on as it sounds as if the pipes start to shake and then the pilot button pops out hence the pilot going out

any ideas what is causing this?

If electricity is disconnected from the boiler will not switch off the pilot immediately.

However the fan will not be running slowly and the boiler will overheat which will put the pilot off.

It sounds as if you have a real fault with the boiler and I would suggest you get a competent engineer to look at it.

I have never understood why people with card meters always let it run out before recharging it. Why do you do this?

Several of the calls we get are prompted by having the gas supply blocked and then they cannot relight the pilot.

well first of all i didnt intentionally let the electric run to 0

i accidentally left the tv on when i went out and ive only ever had to relight it 3 times due to this

secondly if it was a damaged gas valve the pilot would not light and then fire up right?

the pilot goes on ok and fires but then when the pilot button is released it fires up as if it is heating. its only when the pipes start to rattle that it seems to be that the pilot button is pushed out by pressure or something

the pilot will go out as soon as the button is fully pushed out anyway which can be done manually by usuallay turning the button clockwise to unlock it from the "in" position so when the pipes start to rattle after about a minute from relighting it, something is going wrong to make it push back out.

on a final note, i am no diy expert, i know very little about boilers but i come to the conclusion its bust

just wanted to know if someone on here knew why it keeps making the terrible rattle and then pushing the pilot switch out before i actually call someone out to look at it, so that i dont get told something thats absolutely ridiculous and get scammed.

Your pilot light is turned off because the boiler has overheated and its protecting itself.

The boiler may be coming on as a result of a faulty gas valve but my expectation is that its actually a perceived demand for hot water.

Whatever it is there is a need for a competent engineer to diagnose the fault.

You do need someone to look at it but I am going to stab a guess and say that the diverter valve switch is stuck in the on position based on the following part of what you said
when i let go of the pilot switch it shoots up as if i have turned the heating on when it is not on

it will then make a noise like it does when its heating up water, but instead of carrying on as it sounds as if the pipes start to shake and then the pilot button pops out hence the pilot going out
