RAW files in Paint Shop Pro 9

I have a copy of 2004 Paint shop Pro 9, it says it will open Nikon RAW files, x.nef but on trying to open, it says my camera D7000 is not really that new, so would have thought it would have worked? I have looked for up-grade files, but is calls it X9 not 9 and says need to install X9 first, I note Jasc and now Corel so maybe there has been a change in who owns the name Paint Shop? Can I down load anything to make it work with RAW files, or will I need to convert with Rawtherapee etc first?

The D7000 camera was released in 2010, 6 years after that 2004 software. Not surprising that it doesn't support things that did not exist when it was created.

Nikon and all other camera manufacturers can and do change their proprietary file formats whenever they like.
20+ year old unsupported obsolete software will be of no use, unless you also happen to be using 20+ year old cameras and a 20+ year old computer with a 20+ year old operating system.
If you don't want to pay for Lightroom or similar, then use the free software provided by the camera manufacturer.

Can you not convert the RAW files into jpeg, gif or another supported file type?

NX Studio seems to work, as does Rawtherapee, can also use Photomatrix, the NX Studio seems to open in Paint Shop as a 16 bit file, so that seems to have cured my problem. Not as convenient as Photoshop CS5 RAW, but seems to do what I need.
