As the commentator on motor racing, speedway and aviation, Raymond Baxter was always close to the action and sometimes part of it.
He competed in the Monte Carlo rally and during World War II he flew Spitfires. He was twice mentioned in despatches.
Old Jerry Clarkson has some ways to go .... Raymondo did Spitfires in anger -- beats 'doughnuts' ( ;) ) on a wide runway for thrills...
RIP A true legend... who had taken us on many an exciting televisual journey.

Great man!

Heard a clip from him where I think he said he'd had two-and-a-half tours of duty and not got shot down but was then shot by the Yanks!

...looks like they were just as dangerous to have on your side even way back then

In an interview about his wartime career, he described flying over a V-2 rocket site during a launch, and his wingman firing on the missile: "I dread to think what would have happened if he'd hit the thing!"

What a life he had. The world's a better place for him having graced it.

i liked him when he did tomorrows world

Wasn't he offered the job of Formula One commentary but turned it down? So they chose Murray Walker?
