Please can someone offer an explanation to the following ,

on my home CU I have the cooker, up and downstairs rings and the garage protected by the RCD side of the CU, last night I switched off the bedroom light in the small bedroom and the RCD tripped out , I went downstairs and reset it and again turned of the light in the small bedroom and again it took out the RCD

I can recreate this every time with the switch in the small bedroom

It occurs when turning thr light off , however when I first noticed this occur I pressed the switch to turn the light off and stopped and held the switch in ( my little 1 cried out as I was about to turn the light off)

if I flick the switch on/off as normal its fine but if I hold the switch in between on/off it takes out the RCD, im just after a an explanation pls as to why ?

The lightingisnt on the TCD side so this does puzzle me a bit that its the RCD going and not the breaker...

Cheers

Switches are designed to be either ON or OFF not half way, You are creating the problem by causing arcing at the contacts, this is tripping the RCD

I appreciate that, however still curious as to why this is tripping the RCD when the lighting isnt on the RCD side ?

Arcing in a switch between Live and Switched Live would not cause an im-balance between current in Live and Neutral at the RCD so that on it's own would not trip an RCD.

Switching off a lamp in a correctly wired system cannot (in theory) trip an RCD. So the scenario suggests there is more to this than has been said and more information is needed.

The RCD trips occasionally however I cant recall it happenning when switching the small bedroom light on/off , however I can only recreate this when I start to switch the light off and hold the switch in the halfway position I cant recreate this when turning the light on....

I recently bought a new timer fan as the old 1 was bust , the old fan had been wired in 2 core so the earth had been used as the switched live , I took out the 2 core and ran some 3 core in to keep it right
