Our RCD keeps tripping every couple of days. At first we thought it was linked to the cooker as it was tripping when that was turned off. However it does not happen every time and once or twice it has tripped when we've been out the house so the oven hasn't even been turned on! I've tried turning other fuses off and back on to isolate the problem and turning the upstairs lights back on tripped it once, but I've not managed to re-create it since!

Any ideas and need we be worried about safety in the meantime, if so is there anything we can do to make it safer?

Any advice much appreciated...

How long has this been going on?

Have you made any electrical changes recently?

Have you done ANY DIY work at all?

Have you had ANY tradesmen in the house (including painters & decorators)?

Have you had any leaks?

Hi thank you so much for your response. We changed a light fitting some months ago but this has only been happening about 10 days so not sure that can be linked.

We have had an ongoing problem with damp which we are waiting for the builders to resolve (new-ish build with ground floor dug into the hillside and damp proof not up to scratch).

Your comment has made me think though, the pump on the dishwasher went just a few days before we started having problems, could there perhaps be a link there is water has escaped?

Assuming you have RCD protection just to sockets:

If this does not solve your problem, unplug (or switch off if they have a switch like security light) all appliances on the socket circuits except those critical ones you need like fridge/freezer, boiler & burglar alarm.

By all means use the others when you need them, but unplug or switch them off when you have finished with them.

This way, if the RCD should trip, it is easier to pinpoint the culprit.

Thanks all, really appreciate the advice. Dishwasher is now unplugged and we'll work from there.

Thanks again
