I'm looking to repair some damaged mortar/brickwork in porch extension off my 1860's cottage which is experiencing some damp in the porch area. Currently the downpipe from the gutter drains directly onto the group at the foot of the porch, which is obviously an issue and has caused the damp damage below the dpc. Im going to move the downpipe/ re-route the gutter so it drains elsewhere, but in terms of repairing the mortar I'm wondering what the best course of action is?
I've read that if I use a standard cement mortar (eg. a pre-mixed from Wickes or similar), this may not allow any moisture in the walls to escape after I have done the repairs. Is this true? I've read about using lime based mortar, but seems this is harder to get hold of. The extension was build probably around 20 years ago so imagine standard cement based mortar was used here.
Looking for some direction as I've come across quite a lot of conflicting info during my research.
I've attached some images for reference.
Cheers
