Hi,

Hoping for some advice on re-routing my downstairs toilet overflow.

I was in my conservatory today working on re routing a electrical socket spur. When I got the skirting board off, I found there was a lot of damp evidence on the plasterboard behind. So I stripped the plasterboard off, to find the original wood on the brick still, and in a bit of a state in one area.

Noticed that the damp was originating from a broken off plastic pipe - the overflow from the down stairs loo behind the wall!

Pretty shocked that someone thought this a sensible thing to do!

I think I can find a route out through the garage if I cut it and put an elbow in to route through to garage and to outside.

My question is what pipes can be used for this? Are there any flexible pipes that can be used? It would have quite a few turns. From a quick look on screw fix, most overflow pipe was straight white lengths, 21.5mm diameter and solvent welded.
Wondered if there was a better way to approach this?

I would forget about the external overflow altogether and fit one of these:

This flush valve overflows into the pan, and so no external overflow is needed.

One of these will seal the now redundant hole in the bottom of the cistern:

As yours is a close coupled WC, you'll need to split the cistern from the pan to change the flush valve; so reckon on replacing this too:

Thanks robin7.
Didn't know you could do this. Seems a much easier solution.

I plan to re-do the downstairs cloakroom at some point, but will be a while off so I can't wait until then.

The only opening onto the cistern is where you can see the handle in the pic.

both of these seem to have a push button to activate - does the button go where the handle is?
Toilets I've seen with push buttons before have it on top in the centre of the cistern lid. Sorry - not really done much with plumbing toilets before (if this is a daft question!)

Price wise they seem similar - is one simpler to fit?

Just need to check what kind of flush/fill valve is in the toilet just now, if it's a ball arm type with a syphon flush then you need to check that the arm doesn't stretch over the middle of the cistern otherwise it may foul on the new flush valve.
If it's a syphon flush valve then you can get one of those with internal overflow too which would be a direct replacement.

My other question is why it has been overflowing, adjustment required on the current fill valve maybe?

Thanks for the info.

I think the wall was covered up in 2005, so the leaking hasn't been that bad I guess - considering!
