Hello People

Hope you can help. I am currently wiring a house up and it will be tested by an Electricitian who is Part P.

I have a few questions though.

The house has never had an earth. What would I need to do to get one into the house.

Other than putting in New Ring Mains and New Lighting Circuit what other items need to be done. I have heard Smoke Alarms would need to be hard wired in. Can this be done using 1.0T&E on a radial linking the two together straight to the CU.

Is there anything i need to install which I may have forgotton or probally wouldn't know. All cables have been enclosed in PVC Conduit and installed at the correct positions. Cooker on a separate ring. etc

Cheers for the help

If we start with your earthing arrangements (most important ;) ), it would be nice if you could post a few pictures of your incoming cable, metering and consumer unit.

The CU is going to be a new one. So at present there is nothing there. There is a 100 amp breaker and new Digital Meter. The Electricity board fitted new tails. The Incoming Power is off Overhead Lines and is two brown cables coming in. Apparently earth was never in the place. Just Live and Neutral

So it is probably a TT supply. You will need to install an earth rod connected to the MET by the correct sized earth cable.
Do we assume that you have calibrated test equipment that will ensure that the impedance of the earth electrode meets the requirements as laid down in wiring regulations (assuming you are working to BS7671)?

Your incoming supply will need to be protected with a 100mA RCD - this will need to be a time delayed type if it is upstream of the 30mA one that you will have provided to protect all of the socket circuits/.

There's lots more.

One further question. Electricians who are registered with the various "Part P" schemes are only allowed to certify installations that they have done themselves. How will he deal with that?

Has this all been agreed by your LABC, or is this electrician going to lie for you?

I have a few questions though.
I have one for you - why did you not take the trouble to learn all this incredibly basic stuff before you got to the point of "I am currently wiring a house up"?

The house has never had an earth. What would I need to do to get one into the house.
That one, for example - if you've not got an earth, how do you know you won't end up without one from the supplier, which will affect the type of CU you use? How do you know it won't be PME from a DNO with non-standard requirements for main earth or bonding conductors?

Is there anything i need to install which I may have forgotton or probally wouldn't know.
How are we supposed to guess the depths of your ignorance?

Maybe I have been unclear with the word wiring. All I have done is drag the cables through forming various rings mains. Screwed the Back boxes to the wall. Pulled cables for the switches and live feeds for the lighting circuit. Cooker Circuit etc.

I have not "wired" anything in as I'm not qualified and this shall be done by the correct means.

I understood that earthing rods need to be installed and I would not test these as i dont have the means to.

I am only trying to cut down on labour costs by doing the messy work hence my questions if there was anything else like Smoke dectectors and earthing. Digging ground out to install these rods

Thanks for shooting me down but I may have not explained myself before properly ban all sheds.

We obviously are not all blessed like you

Have you done all that under the direction and supervision of the electrician, so that he can be sure you've got them in the right places, at the right depths, through holes in the right places, with the right bend radii and the right supports?

So why did you say "The house has never had an earth. What would I need to do to get one into the house."?

Surely the electrician under whose direction and supervision you are working should be ensuring you do that correctly?

[shrug]You were the one who stood up and said "I am currently wiring a house up" and then proceeded to ask questions that nobody who was wiring a house up, or was working under the direction and supervision of an electrician, should need to ask.[/shrug]

As you're starting from scratch it will probably be in your interest to contact your supply company and ask if your supply can be converted to TNC-S. TNC-S means they provide you with an earth.

They will charge a fee but in the long run it's money well spent

all depends if you still trust the said electrician - no harm in asking others for their advice

(you do remember advice dont you BAS)

Yeh, just ignore what BAS says... Hes not tryin to be helpful. One of these people who knows everything. PENSDOWN has got it right. Contact the supply company with your issue.

ps...This is a great site. Only found it recently!

He is being helpful - he is pointing out the serious issues that have to be considered when undertaking this major task.

The most helpful way, would be to give him some curteous advice. We can all see that the gent is out of his depth. But he was lookin for advice. Rather than say what he did, he should have offered the advice of PENSDOWN. That was to contact the supply company. Simple and curteous.
