I have a little job to do, point up some loose pointing on a window jamb and about three bricks on a low garden wall.

I went to get some Hansons from Wickes but a builder said it was poor. He said mix your own batch up.

I probably only need about 10kg - really is there any point. Can someone recommend a decent readymix mortar?

Blue Circle Assured Mortar?

Also more important it needs to dry to a darkish grey not white.

Hi SirGalahad,

I'm no pro Brickie, but I used both the Hanson's and blue circle quality assured mortars building 2 small walls in my garden. I found the Hanson's was actually what I preferred out of the two. I seemed to get better results and work quicker with it.

The Hanson's was also more forgiving with tapping the bricks into space that the blue circle, but it was my first attempt at bricklaying so there was a lot of tapping.

In favour of the blue circle, I took down my first attempt and started again and it was pretty secure! Had to get a chisel for my SDS as the hammer and bolster would not shift it.

In terms of colour the Hanson's is a Brown sandy colour and the blur circle is grey, but not very dark.

Hope that helps.

the ready mix stuff is guaranteed to be a proper mix, and no "shovel measures" and whatnot. I think it's great for small jobs as it reduces wastage. For big jobs you can vary the mix and save money overall by mixing yourself, but persaonlly I used the tarmac stuff from homebase and it worked perfectly for me. They're probably all owned by the same company.
