We have an old Citroen Xsara Picasso as a runabout. The rear wiper arm broke off last week in the overnight snow.

I now have a new wiper arm and blade. But the nut on the old one just won't budge. I've tried penetrating oil for days. I have been trying with a socket wrench and an adjustable spanner. It doesn't actually look at all rusty. It just seems to be on too tight. How much force can I use? I don't know what the rod (spindle?) is connected to. Is it possible to damage the motor or the linkages etc? Is there anything else I can try?

Thanks

Dremel or similar and cut it off, carefully. Don't cut into the threads.

Might need to use a puller to then pull the arm off the spline.

Heat nut up.
Not sure if that would damage any seals but heating the nut will cause it to expand and break rust seal

Can you borrow an impact wrench, to shock it off?
Get a spare nut first if you need to cut - I don't know what thread it is.
The new alloy blade arm uses the splines on the boss to form new ones - these can be a sod to shift too, but a puller is available if it won't budge.
John :)

It was all seized solid so I had to give in and use my friendly garage man.

I wonder if he cut it off or got the "big bar" on it?

He had to cut. Nut came off with the power driver. But the arm had totally fused. Nice job and nice man!

I’ve never had a problem removing wiper arms and I have never had an arm puller in my toolbox but a while back, I couldn’t remove the rear arm on my own car and as the spindle came through the glass, I was fearful of breaking the glass if I was too brutal with it so I borrowed my mates one. Came off in seconds. Great little tool!

I cut one off with junior hacksaw as it was thru glass and impact would have caused damage .
