Recently built an extension to our kitchen, i.e. kitchen/sunroom. We have extractor fan in ceiling quite close to cooker. Must I also have a cooker hood? There is steel beam above cooker so requires to be a recirculating one but I am wondering if it really necessary considering we have the fan.

You do not "have to have one" by any law or regulation, but if you decide you need one don't waste your time or money on a recirculating one. If your current extractor serves the purpose then the only worry you may have is contamination of the area of the ceiling surrounding it. I would have thought that if you have no external wall behind the cooker it should be possible to tee into the vent for your ceiling one using ducting for a new hood/extractor.
