I need about 25 low level LED wall lights, the type that shine towards the floor and are recessed into the wall above the skirting or to the side of the stairs.

However the damn things are nearly £70 each. Anyone know of any cheaper but good alternatives? Im after a white rectangle type, ideally below £20 each not the Aurora or Borgo type high end ones.

Thx.

Ah Astro Lighting, working hard to design fittings that are impossible to install.

If the bulbs go (I know they are LED and last a long time) or there is a general problem with it, you only have one option to replace it and that is to damage the plaster right?
Yes.

Also do not underestimate the depth required to install the lights you chose, the last lot we fitted were the depth of standard plasterboard so were quite simple, some other models are 75mm+ deep.

Yes that's the other problem. This one looks to occupy 80mm and this is going into a mixture of a 100mm block wall or plaster board walls.

Should these be fitted in back boxes?

Some come with their own back boxes, some don't need boxes, others fit standard electrical boxes, such as plaster depth single boxes or architrave boxes for example. You will have to check the specification.

The wiring varies a lot too, some need an LED driver and all the lights wiring in series, some require an extra low voltage power supply and all the lights connecting in parallel, some run straight from the mains supply.

80mm is rather deep to be installing in a block wall!

Any idea why these are so costly though? It's not as if they are some special lights just because they are going at low level, I mean it's the same function or technical components as any other light right? Is it just the the brand and the fact that "oh let's triple the price because they want to install it 3 inches above the floor and not 30 inches and it's a new decorative market"?!

Can't understand why nobody else is making rectangular floor lights at less than £20 each. Time to start a new business me thinks.

It's not as if they are some special lights just because they are going at low level,

They have to be tough enough to be able to resist being kicked, the difficulty to remove / replace / repair them means they have to be made to be more reliable than your average wall light. There may also be additional safety requirements for lamps built into the wall of what could be the main fire exit route and the reputable manufacturers comply with these requirements.

I like the idea of the ones that fit a standard single electrical box.

Not that I've fitted any yet.

I imagine these could mean one could easily make alterations in the future, like similar size replacements which won't leave holes in the wall.

Assuming 230 v is run to the boxes, one could even convert a few to round-pin sockets in the future for standard lamps etc.

This sounds the way to go IYAM.

The Aurora square ones mount in a standard single box. Albeit a deep one. They're not very bright though
