I'm halfway through reinstating a downstairs fireplace which was previously closed up with board across the chimney opening with the main hearth left but with sides and back plastered smooth.
Had the chimney swept and smoke tested and all is ok,we want to use one of those cast iron fire baskets which are readily available.
The only problem I've come up against is what to use to line the opening with as obviously the brickwork at the back of the hearth is a stuctural wall of the house.
Seen some slabs of heat resistant blocks but it looks a bit industrial, guy at work told me there are some kind of slim fire bricks available which sound ideal as I don't want to reduce the size of the opening too much....any ideas/suggestions chaps?
