Morning all

For reasons I won't go into now, I'm battening out and dry lining over an alcove at my daughter's house. There's a double electrical socket on the wall, and as I'll be raising the level of the wall from the current surface by a couple of inches, I'll need to bring the socket out as well. The current socket is flush with the existing wall surface and I doubt whether there's sufficient slack in the cables to simply lift it out to a new position. So I'll probably have to extend the cables, though I won't know for sure till I actually start the job. What factors should I bear in mind to ensure that the socket is relocated in accordance with regulations?

Many thanks in advance.

Cables (if less than 50mm from surface) must remain in zones - ie vertically or horizontally from socket.
If you make a join you must use a maintenance Free junction box.

If there are two cables to the existing socket then it probably forms part of a ring final circuit, so continuity of the ring must be checked snd maintained.

If cable(s) only comes from one direction you may carefully knock out part of the wall to make more cable available and move socket to suit.

EDIT: If your adding 2" battens thinkabout using a 47mm back box screwed to the wall.

Many thanks to you both for the responses. Will proceed on the basis of the advice given.
