Removal of wall

Want to remove a small 4 inch wall approx 6 feet long in a downstairs room. It is load bearing and also supports upstairs floor joists. Is it a legal requirement that inform building control and will they ask for calculations from an engineer for the steel beam being used.

yes, openings of 1800mm and above require structural calculations.
