remove beam under the stairs

I would like to remove a beam I have under the stairs in the living room, but am not sure whether its supporting the staircase. Does anyone have any ideas if this can be removed?

is it usual for builders to install a beam that is not supporting anything?

i tried to attach a picture, but I couldn't find a way round! any ideas how to attach pictures? Perhaps this may give you an idea..
