We recently removed a wall in our kitchen/living space. It's left a gap that we're trying to fill ourselves.

I've attached an image of the floor layers next to the gap.

The measurements for each layer from top to bottom are approx: 21mm, 20mm, 57mm, 12mm.

I have two questions.

1) What are the four layers made of so I can purchase equivalents? (I can spot chipboard and timber)

2) Any recommendations for how we should go about filling in the hole? Should we just lay each layer down in the gap to fill it? Do we nail some of it down?

Thanks,
Pieter

I would build a solid timber frame around the inside and then build up to finish at floor level. Should only be a few hours work and not that much in materials.

Cut the chipboard back 25mm and drop in a new piece. I usually make a floor cutter - a jigsaw blade cut down to the right depth - if you do this you need to keep the jigsaw pressed firmly down as you cut as it can try and kick up. Is the back end of the hole that we can't see in the photo made of concrete? If it is you'll need to support the be chipboard at that side.
