Removing 1960's tiles

I want to tile my hall floor. Can I tile over the Brown 1960's tiles that are still there? They are not ceramic, but I can't think what they are called.

Thermoplastic "Marley tiles " dunno about tiling over though. Sorry. A proper tiler will be along.
