Removing an Old Immersion Heater

Do it with the cylinder full, but with no more pressure on it. Use a flat immersion spanner [not a box type] and hit it fairly smartly with a hammer. If the threads and flange on the cyl are clean and in good condition, just put the new heater and new fibre washer in bone dry. It will then be easier to remove next time. Fill the hot water system before you connect the wire. If it leaks, give the spanner a few gentle taps with the hammer.
My expierience of this and has never let me down is driain enough water to below the immersion opening, obviously with the wiring disconnected and out the way, heat up the old immersion with a gas bottle, and with a good sharp tap on the spanner it shud come out ok.U may need to clean the surface slightly with a brillo pad or steel wool after removing. i have always used a joint compound on the new immersion itself and on both sides of the washer and put back in. Jobs a good un ! good luck and carefully does it dont tear the cylinder! 
It's not cheap to tear a cylinder these days

Which is why I asked the question. I recognise that a lot of torque could be inadvertently directed to the cylinder.

Short sharp whack will loosen it.

Put the new one in without paste, and it will come out more easily next time. It won't leak if the flange is in good condition.
