Have this ugly 90s gas fireplace which we only used once many years ago, I assume removing it wouldn't deter potential buyers should it come to selling the house.

I want to block the chimney to avoid draughts and dust/bird droppings but am hesitant to do so while there is still a live gas appliance.

How do I make what is left look nice and functional, was thinking some thick wood at the bottom and leave bricks exposed or some shelves but not sure what to do with the edges where it meets paint.

Don't want another fireplace and no other place for TV.

Would be grateful for any ideas.

Have a google see what you like, so many different options .....

As for the fire, just get it disconnected properly if you want to get rid of it. Be about £70 or something.

Get a gas engineer to disconnect that and safely remove the gas pipes too.

As for blocking it up, you can brick it up then plaster it.

Or you can block it with plasterboard.

As for the shelves, you can build them by using MDF and measure the opening and cut the MDF and install it.

You might need a vent to allow air in the chimney.

I posted because I couldn't find many examples for this particular basic type of fireplace in Google, it is all about proper fireplaces.

Yes, will be done by gas engineer, not touching this thing myself, need DIY advice for what to do after.
