hi, I have a problem where i think i know the answer but i am not 100% sure.

i have just bought the house next to me, with the intention of knocking through, i want to remove one set of stairs and fill the hole left. anyone any suggestions? the house is 7 years old on a new build estate.

cheers in advance

Should be straight foward. After removing staircase you will be left with an opening, the stair well. Simply insert joists in this area using joist hangers between trimmer and wall and board over using tongue and grooved boards. Fix plasterboard to underside
Position new joists at 400mm centres
You can get joist hangers at most builders merchants .

cheers,

i also forgot to add that i wait to take the wall out that runs along the stairs for the full height. will this bee a load bearing wall and will extending it be ok?

also do i need the building inspector in?

Is the stair case between two walls or is it open on one side and is the wall you want to remove under the staircase.
I think you would be wise to check with BC just to be on the safe side ,I am not 100% sure on current regulations re this type of alteration

sorry for late reply,

the staircase is between an outside wall and an interior studwall, the stud wall goes from the ground upto the loft, and sound very hollow. my neighbour is "a builder" who says he veiwed the houses being built, he insists all the interior walls were put in place after the floors went in.
what i have in mind is just extending the ceilig joists to meet the outside wall. failing that i will drop the upstairs wall and build the floor in and make the remaining area into a cupboard.

cheers
