Hi, I know this may seem a bit trivial but I need advice on how to remove the top (spindle) off a tap. I have removed the disc at the top and also the screw but can't shift the spindle to access the tap innards. I have tried pulling it off and also tapping it off with a mallet and piece of wood without success. I don't want to hit it too hard in case I damage the tap. Any advice would be most welcome

You can sometimes gain access to the valve by opening the tap fully and then unscrewing the shroud under the spindle

the shroud on this tap is loose but even if I open up the tap fully and lift the shroud I still can't get at the nut

Remove disc and undo nut. Blowlamp to heat the handle and then "tap" it.

I don't have a blowlamp I'm afraid. I wonder if I just keep tapping it lightly it might budge

Try tapping it upwards on one side then the opposite side you can tap it fairly hard without problems but within reason

With the screw out, filling the void with penetrating oil can't do any harm....with perseverance it will shift but some heat can help.....its a brass to brass fixing and there's often verdigris between the two.

wrap an old towel around the tap body to protect the basin - then pour boiling water over the head , followed by cold water - the thermal shock should help ;) but it wont help the basin , hence the towel .

Thankyou to all who gave me advice. I will try them tomorrow when it's convenient to turn the water off. Brian

I managed to get the handle off the tap using a combination of the tips I received on here. Have now replaced the faulty valve and everything is Hunky Dory. Many thanks again. Brian
