Removing tar from stairs

I am in the process of removing the carpet and linoleum from my stairs. My stairs are wood, but under the linnolium is tar. I would like to remove the tar.

Does anyone have suggestions on how to remove the tar? I have been scraping with a chisel and that is taking a long time. What could I do to speed up the process?

I have never heard of that kind of tar removal. It doesn't look like Rona has it, but I will look around.

Any other ideas for removing tar from wood stairs?

Also does anyone have any ideas about removing the linnolium that is stuck pretty solidly on the stairs with the hardened tar?

possibly not, but a car spares shop i'm sure they will have one! and i'm sure tar spots on cars is not restricted to the UK!
