Removing Vinyl floor tile adhesive.

I have removed my vinyl floor tiles and i am left with the horrible black adhesive which is a pain in the backside to remove, i would like to lay ceramic tiles. Will the ceramic tile adhesive bond to the vinyl tile adhesive or will i have to try and remove it completely, which i think is probably impossible.
