Anyone know the best way (quickest) of removing tiles and adhesive from a messy old vinyl floor in preparation for tiling.

I think you can run use a hot iron (with a bit of foil to protect the iron face) and the adhesive should become softer allowing to the tiles to come away. The soft adhesive can be scraped off.
You could also try using a Bully Floor Scraper / Tile Lifters.
