What's the best way to remove old ceramic tiles from a kitchen wall?

I am thinking about buying one of these:

http://www.screwfix.com/prods/55238/Power-Tools/SDS-Drills/Titan-SF25X2-2-6kg-SDS-Plus-Drill

Do you think this is up to the job?

What kind of damage will it do to the wall (which is plaster on brick) and how easy will it be to repair the plaster?

How flat does the wall need to be before retiling? Presumably a skim is not needed?

Thanks in advance

Just finished a similar job.

In the end - used a hammer and chisels. Took a bit of care with first few, but once in the swing, only took a couple of hours. I did reskim but only as in one area plaster was blown and had to do a bit of reboarding.

I prefer a lump hammer & sharp bolster chisel

I’ve got one similar; they are always a useful thing to have around & can be used for the very stubborn bits but careless use (or even careful use sometimes) can cause an awful lot of damage very quickly.

Needs to be fairly flat but not perfect; the flatter the better if you have large tiles. Larger holes & gouges should be rough filled but as long as it’s reasonable flat a re-skim is not usually necessary; but it depends how mush of the plaster comes away with the adhesive or how much damage you do with the SDS.
